Ynysybwl Oral Histories: AJ's Story

Ynysybwl is a village of around 5000 people, situated in the small Clydach valley a few miles to the north of the town of Pontypridd in south Wales. Formerly a small rural village until the late 1800s, the village, as it is now, is a product of deep coal mining. The Lady Windsor Colliery opened in 1884, closing in 1988, 104 years later.

In the late Spring and Summer of 2015, after several months of preparation with community organisations, in the late Spring and Summer of 2015, we collected oral histories from 16 residents in Ynysybwl. A year later we continued our work in co-production with community organisations,

The focus of the oral histories was residents' recollections of energy, how they had lived with it for heating, lighting, cooking and storing food, and entertainment etc., how its use and production shaped their lives and that of the community, and what changes they had experienced.

This is AJ's story... (52 minutes, 06 seconds - recorded May 2015)
