Act I

Enter Jules on a Brompton with Maiden Grace Britannia on the back(!) (Audience laugh) : Now is the Winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this climate change. We have journeyed far and come only a small way towards understanding what this grave news might mean to us.

Maiden Grace Britannia (quiet, subdued):  Oh Jules, all the Greens that lour’d upon our house in the deep bosom of the Brexit buried and Trumped

Enter Big Oli Jnr (US Embarrassment for the Environment) stage left in his white SUV, honking his horn cheerfully

B.O.:    (Scheming quietly to himself)  ... Tis not all ill tidings, my cup is half full dear Jules. Nay, indeed it overfloweth! Think ye not of the bountiful opportunities. And look now, how you do displease the Queens and Kings of Europe with your notions of carbon taxes and demand reduction.  Canst thou not be more lenient with the Euroserfs? And what of it if you cannot - all the more money making and merriment for me!

JV:    Tush tush, Oli (Boo’s encouraged) Does not the light of the sun shine freely on our great estate? This is not so expected, no neither unexpected. It tis come to this, you have made your palaces with scant glazing, and scantier insulation. Verily an overweening pass. The body of our world is sick with fever. The hot sweats are nigh.   We few, we unhappy few, we band of brothers; for he to-day that faces the storms ahead with me, shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile, his day shall gentle his condition; and people in England now a-bed  (sleepwalking!) shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here, and hold themselves cheap whiles any speaks that fought with us upon Earth Day, Cop 21 and so many battlefields to come ...

MGB: (Swoons and is caught in the arms of King Carbonara of Slow food Italy)

Enter Liberty’s Proud Maiden (The Statue of Liberty): Let’s all cry “peace, freedom and liberty”. Though authority be a stubborn bear, yet he is oft led by the nose by Jules TBC…

My Friend Jules explores new ways for us to think about energy and to share points of view about this vital common resource. It recognises that our energy decisions depend as much on human factors as science. By contributing your unique story about Jules, you help us more fully understand our society’s complex relationship to energy.
